Off grid systems work very similarly to grid connected solar systems, and are applicable for: Remote regions without a utility power supply, limited use recreation camps or summer homes, and for those who want to be their own completely independent energy producer. Off grid systems require a battery bank, and most often a generator for emergency backup and for assisted charging during the winter.  Direct current electricity is produced from the solar array, which is harnessed and controlled by a charge controller that feeds a battery bank and acts as your power supply. Off grid systems require a bit more hands on interaction from the home owner, as well as more of an upfront investment.
